This part of IEC 60904 defines the requirements for measuring the spectral sensitivity of linear and non-linear photovoltaic (PV) devices. It applies only to equipment with single-layer solar cells. The spectral sensitivity of a photovoltaic device is used for spectral mismatch correction when a photovoltaic device is calibrated in a spectrum deviating from the irradiance data of the reference spectrum specified in IEC 60904-3 and when a different spectral sensitivity is used with respect to the tested device. This procedure is specified in IEC 60904-7. In addition, the spectral sensitivity of a photovoltaic device is used for the development and evaluation of cells, as it is a measure of recombination and other processes occurring within the semiconductor or cell material system. The responsible committee is DKE/K 373 "Photovoltaische Solarenergie-Systeme" ("Photovoltaic solar power systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 60904-8:1998-11 .
