This part of IEC 60794-4, which is a family specification, covers cable construction, test methods and optical, mechanical, environmental and electrical performance requirements for OPGW (optical ground wire) which is used for the protection of electrical power lines against atmospheric discharges or short-circuits and, at the same time, as a high bandwidth transport media for communications-and-control optical signals. Optical ground wires usually consist of single-mode fibres contained in one or more protective cable elements made of polymer material or stainless steel. The conductive area is provided by an aluminium tube and one or more outer protective layers serving as reinforcement of spirally stranded wires of aluminium, aluminium alloy, aluminium clad steel, galvanised steel or a mixture thereof. A central cable chamber can also be used to hold the cable elements. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
