This part of IEC 60794 is directed at manufacturers and customers and is a family specification describing duct, directly buried and lashed single-mode optical fibre telecommunication cables. This type of product specification is used as the basis to prepare detail specifications. This type of cable is used for transferring high-speed data signals (>10 Gigabit ethernet) over long-distance links (80 km-400 km). They shall meet special mechanical requirements which have been adopted to the climate where these cables are used. Requirements of the sectional specification IEC 60794-3 for duct, buried and aerial cables apply to cables of this standard. The standard refers to the DIN EN 60793 (Optical fibres and measurement methods) series and is based on the basic specifications of the DIN EN 60794 series, amongst others. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
