This part of IEC 60794 applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, as well as hybrid telecommunication cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. The purpose of this standard is to specify test methods that serve to establish uniform requirements for the geometrical, transmission, material, mechanical, aging (environmental exposure) and climatic properties of fiber optic cables, as well as electrical requirements, where applicable. Throughout the standard, the term "optical fibre cable" also includes optical fibre cable elements, microduct optical fibre units, and so on. The standards are testing standards and are aimed at manufacturers, customers and testing laboratories that use these standards for production monitoring and quality assurance. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
