This part of International Standard IEC 60794-1 applies to optical fiber cables for use in telecommunications equipment and in equipment using similar techniques, and to cables containing a combination of optical fibers and electrical conductors. The primary aim of this standard is to provide the user with an overview of the contents of the various parts of the IEC 60794-1-2X series of standards. The following comparison applies to the assignment of the tests to the parts of the standard. These documents specify test methods to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the geometrical, transmission, material, mechanical, ageing (environmental stress) and climatic characteristics of optical fiber cables and, where applicable, for the electrical requirements. The phrase "optical cables" contained in the documents may also include optical fiber units, fiber units for microducts and so on. The secondary objective of this draft standard is to assist the user with useful guidance and specifications for the testing of optical fiber cables. This standard is to be applied together with DIN EN 60794-1-1 (VDE 60794-100-1). The edition DIN EN 60794-1-2 (VDE 0888-100-2):2014-07 has been technically revised and the contents of DIN EN 60794-1-20 (VDE 0888-100-20):2014-10 have been incorporated. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenkabel" ("Optical fibres and fibre cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 60794-1-20:2014-10; VDE 0888-100-20:2014-10 , DIN EN 60794-1-2:2014-07; VDE 0888-100-2:2014-07 .
