This part of IEC 60793 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to define a test that determines the suitability of sub- category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of immersion in distilled or demineralized water which may occur in transport, storage or actual use. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of immersion in water over a given period. This procedure shall be conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-18, Test R. The standard contains the minimum requirement, the details as well the test severities for the water immersion test. Thus, the standard provides manufacturers and users with investment security and test laboratories and manufacturers with detailed information on testing. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 60793-1-53:2002-10; VDE 0888-253:2002-10 .
