This part of IEC 60793 specifies values for the tensile strength of optical fibre samples. With this method, individual lengths of uncabled and unbundled glass optical fibre are tested. Sections of fibre are broken with controlled increasing stress or strain that is uniform over the entire fibre length and cross section. The stress or strain is increased at a constant nominal rate until breakage occurs. The standard provides manufacturers and test laboratories with security regarding the specification of the test and serves as a reference for quality assurance. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.6 "Lichtwellenleiter und Lichtwellenleiterkabel" ("Fibres and cables") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
