This standard gives the terminology, essential ratings, characteristics, safety tests as well as the measuring methods for photocouplers - optoelectronic devices designed for the transfer of the electrical signals by utilizing optical radiation to provide coupling with simultaneous galvanic (or electrical) isolation between the input and output. Different types of photocouplers include ambient-rated and case-rated photocouplers for signal-isolation applications. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 631.1 "Einzel-Halbleiterbauelemente" ("Discrete semiconductor devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
