This part of IEC 60664 details the conditions in which the reduction of clearance and creepage distances can apply to rigid assemblies such as printed boards or terminals of components. Protection against pollution can be achieved by any type of encapsulation, such as coating, casting or potting. The protection can be applied to one or both sides of the assembly. This standard specifies the insulating properties of the material used for protection. The clearances and creepage distances requirements of IEC 60664-1 apply between all uncoated conductive parts. This standard applies only to permanently protected assemblies. Repaired assemblies are not included. Technical committees should consider the influence of overheating of conductors and components, especially in the event of a fault, on the protection and, if necessary, decide on additional requirements. The safe behavior of the arrangements depends on a precise and monitored manufacturing process for the application of the protective arrangement. Requirements for quality control, for example through sample testing, should be considered by the technical committees. The responsible committee is DKE/K 123 "Isolationskoordination für Niederspannungs-Betriebsmittel" ("Insulation coordination for low-voltage equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
