The standard specifies requirements for handlamps and similar portable luminaires which are held in the hand, hooked up or resting on a surface for use with electric light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. Part 2-8 is to be read in conjunction with the main sections of DIN EN 60598-1 (VDE 0711-1) to which reference is made. Handlamps which can be fixed to a support by means of wing screws, clips or magnets, and luminaires intended for inspection of the interior of barrels, are within the scope of this standard. This edition of DIN EN 60598-2-8 (VDE 0711-2-8) includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: requirements have been updated to make them consistent and to solve contradicting requirements introduced in the Amendment 2. In Amendment 2 of IEC 60598-2-8, a requirement was introduced specifying that handlamps shall always be classified as rough service luminaire only. The implication of this statement was that according to 4.13.4 of DIN EN 60598-1 (VDE 0711-1), this kind of luminaire shall always be IP54. These requirements were in contradiction with several points of this Part 2 where it is considered acceptable for ordinary luminaires. Furthermore, the contradiction between the requirement regarding the type of material used for the protective cover has been corrected. The responsible Committee is DKE/UK 521.4 "Leuchten" ("Luminaires") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
