Overview

The standard specifies requirements for luminaires intended for use where the necessity of limited temperature on the outer surface exists, due to the risk of thermal effects, combustion or degradation of materials but where the risk of explosion in the atmosphere does not exist. The luminaires are for use with electric light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V. The standard does not include specific requirements for luminaires for use in explosive gas atmospheres and explosive dust atmospheres. A special limitation of the temperature for luminaires which can be covered with combustible dust, applies for example in production sites where textile fabrics are processed or stored, and in premises, where combustible dust, such as colour powder, wood dust, grain dust, flour dust and textile dust are being accumulated in large quantities but there is no risk of explosion. The responsible body is DKE/UK 521.4 "Leuchten" ("Luminaires") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
