Overview

The standard series DIN EN 6059 gives test methods for protection sleeves intended to be installed in electrical cables in aircraft. Part 502 specifies a method for assessing the behaviour of protection sleeves or conduits subject to an external electric arc, either at 115 V AC or 230 V AC 400 Hz. This standard shall be applied in conjunction with EN 6059-100. The primary aim of this test is to produce, in a controlled fashion, electric arcs at the immediate vicinity of a protection sleeve or conduit and to examine possible consequences on cables inside this protection, which are supposed to be maintained in a safe condition. These electric arcs are representative of those, which may occur in service when a typical cable bundle is severely damaged. In order to optimize thickness and mass of such protection, it is necessary to associate a current limit In to each sleeve or conduit construction. Two levels of prospective fault current have been specified for all protection sizes. The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 6059-502:2010-09: a) the titles of Figure 1, Figure 2 und Figure 4 have been modified; key item 1 in Figure 2 has been corrected; the numbering in Figure 3 has been modified and the key has been adapted accordingly; b) a statement on the use of protective material with joint or overlap has been incorporated into 4.3; c) the illustration in Figure 4 has been replaced by a drawing; d) a statement on the adjustment of the test sequence in case of abrasion has been incorporated. The standards of the EN 6059 series are prepared by Section Electrical of ASD-STAN under collaboration of German experts of the Standards Committee Aerospace. The Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe - Standardization (ASD-STAN) has been declared responsible for the preparation of European Standards (EN) in the aerospace field by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The responsible German committee is Working Committee NA 131-04-08 AA "Installationskomponenten" ("Harness components") of the DIN Standards Committee Aerospace (NL).
