This part of IEC 60384 applies to fixed capacitors for direct current, with metallized electrodes and polyethylene-terephthalate dielectric for use in electronic equipment. This standard prescribes preferred ratings and characteristics and selects from IEC 60384-1 the appropriate quality assessment procedures, tests and measuring methods, and gives general performance requirements. Test severities and requirements prescribed in detail specifications referring to this sectional specification should be of equal or higher performance level, because lower performance levels are not permitted. These capacitors may have "self-healing properties" depending on conditions of use. They are primarily intended for applications where the a.c. component is small with respect to the rated voltage. Two performance grades of capacitors are covered, Grade 1 for long-life application and Grade 2 for general application. Capacitors for electromagnetic interference suppression and surface mount fixed metallized polyethylene-terephthalate film dielectric d.c. capacitors are not included, but are covered by IEC 60384-14 and IEC 60384-19 respectively. For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in IEC 60384-1 and the following apply. Performance grade 1 capacitors (long life) are capacitors for long-life applications with stringent requirements for the electrical parameters, performance grade 2 capacitors (general purpose) are capacitors for general application where the stringent requirements for grade 1 capacitors are not necessary. Thereby the rated voltage is the maximum d.c. voltage which may be applied continuously to a capacitor at the rated temperature. In this process, the sum of the d.c. voltage and the peak a.c. voltage applied to the capacitor must not exceed the rated voltage. The value of the peak a.c. voltage must not exceed the following percentages of the rated voltage and must be not greater than 280 V (50 Hz: 20 %; 100 Hz: 15 %: 1 000 Hz: 3 %; 10 000 Hz: 1 %) unless otherwise specified in the detail specification. IEC 60384-1 shall be considered regarding the marking of the capacitors. The information to be provided in marking of capacitors is usually selected from the following list and its relative importance corresponds with the ranking: nominal capacity, rated voltage, tolerance of nominal capacity, category voltage, year and month (or week) of the manufacture, name of the manufacturer and reference to the detail specification. The preferred ratings and preferred characteristics are defined in clause "Preferred ratings and characteristics". The preferred values of the rated voltage are: 1; 1,5; 2,2; 3,3; 4,7 and 6,8 and their decimal multiples. These values correspond with the basic series of the preferred numbers E6 in accordance with IEC 60063. The preferred values of the tolerances of nominal capacity are +5 %; +10 % and +20 %. The preferred values of the rated values are: 40 V - 50 V - 63 V - 100 V - 160 V - 200 V - 250 V - 400 V - 630 V - 1 000 V and 1 600 V. These values correspond with the basic series of the preferred numbers R5 and R10 in accordance with ISO 3. The standard value of the rated temperature is 85 °C. Clause "Quality assessment procedures" explains the primary stage of manufacture, namely winding the capacitor or the corresponding process, the structurally similar components, the certified records of released lots and the certification approval. The method with fixed sample sizes is described in IEC 60384-1. The sample shall represent the range of the capacitors for which certification approval has been applied. However, it shall not necessarily be the entire range covered by the detail specification. The sample shall consist of specimens with the highest and lowest voltage and contain the lowest and highest capacity values for these voltages. If more than four rated voltages are given, an average rated voltage shall be also tested. For certification approval of a range, testing of four or six values (combinations of capacity values/rated voltages) is necessary. If the range covers less than four values, the number of specimens shall correspond with the required number for four values. Two or three additional specimens are allowed per value as a substitute for failures of specimens for which the manufacturer shall not be held responsible. The number of specimens indicated in group 0 applies for the case that all groups shall be tested. If this is not the case, the quantities can be reduced accordingly. If the sampling plan for the certification approval contains additional groups, the specimen quantities required for group 0 shall be supplemented by the specimens required by the additional groups. Table 1 also includes the sampling plan and the permitted number of non-compliant components for qualification approval tests. In chapter "Test and measurement procedures", the visual examination and check of dimensions, electrical tests, robustness of terminations, resistance to soldering heat and solderability, rapid change of temperature, vibration, bump and shock, damp heat, steady state, charge and discharge, component solvent resistance and solvent resistance of the marking are explained. The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 60384-2:2006-07: a) all clauses have been revised taking into consideration the entire content of the previous edition in accordance with the current shape and design requirements. b) Table 1, Sampling plan together with numbers of permissible non-conformance for qualification approval test, has been adjusted. c) Table 3, Lot-by-lot inspection, has been changed, highlighting assessment level EZ only. d) Table 4, Periodic inspection, has been changed, highlighting assessment level EZ only. e) The preferred values of rated voltages have been updated in conformance with the basic series of preferred values R5 and R10 given in ISO 3. The responsible committee is K 611 "Kondensatoren" ("Capacitors") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
