Overview

This part of the VDE 0165 applies to users and covers factors directly related to the inspection, maintenance and repair of electrical installations within hazardous areas only, where the hazard may be caused by flammable gases, vapours, mists, dusts, fibres or flyings. At the time of printing this standard, there are legal requirements for the scope in Germany specified in the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV) and substantiated in the Technical Rules for Operational Safety (TRBS). This standard can be used as a source of knowledge. Deviations at national level shall be observed. This part does not include: - other fundamental installation and inspection requirements for electrical installations, - the verification of suitability of electrical equipment, - the repair and restoration of explosion protected equipment [see DIN EN 60079-19 (VDE 0165-20-1)].This standard supplements the requirements of DIN VDE 0100-600 (VDE 0100-600). In the case of dusts, fibres or flyings the level of housekeeping may influence the inspection, maintenance and repair requirements. This standard is intended to be applied where there can be a risk due to the presence of explosive gas or dust mixtures with air or combustible dust layers under normal atmospheric conditions. Electrical installations in hazardous areas possess features specially designed to render them suitable for operations in such atmospheres. It is essential for reasons of safety in those areas that, throughout the life of such installations, the integrity of those special features is preserved. This standard provides the details for initial inspection and on-going inspections. On-going inspections are carried out as either regular periodic inspections or continuous supervision by skilled personnel. As a result of these inspections, maintenance and repair may also be needed. Inspections are carried out in accordance with this standard, however for older installations the details for the equipment and installations requirements should be referenced to the standards applied at the date of the installation. The responsible body is DKE/K 235 "Errichten elektrischer Anlagen in explosionsgefährdeten Bereichen" ("Electrical installations in explosives atmospheres") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
