This part of IEC 60079 deals with the classification of potentially explosive atmospheres in which hazards due to flammable gases or vapors may occur, which can then be used as a basis to assist in the appropriate selection and installation of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres. In areas where flammable gases or vapors may occur in hazardous quantities or concentrations, protective measures are required to reduce the risk of explosions. The purpose of this part of DIN EN 60079 (VDE 0165) is to set out the essential criteria for an assessment of the risk of ignition and to provide guidance on the applicable design and monitoring parameters that can be used to reduce such hazards. Flammable mists may form or be present at the same time as flammable vapors. Liquids that are not considered hazardous under this standard (because of their flash point) may also form flammable mists when released under pressure. In such cases, the strict application of zoning for gases and vapors as a basis for selecting equipment need not be practical. Information on flammable mists can be found in Annex G. In any site, irrespective of size, there may be numerous sources of ignition apart from those associated with equipment. Appropriate precautions will be necessary to ensure safety in this context. This standard is applicable with judgment for other ignition sources. The responsible committee is DKE/K 235 "Errichten elektrischer Anlagen und deren Betriebsmittel in explosionsgefährdeten Bereichen" ("Installation of electrical installations in explosive atmospheres") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE
