This part of IEC 60079 specifies the general requirements for construction, testing and marking of electrical equipment and Ex Components intended for use in explosive atmospheres. Provided that not changed by one of the standards which supplement this standard, the following applies, that electrical equipment in accordance with this standard is intended to be used in areas where an explosion hazard is caused under the following conditions of normal climate: temperature -20 °C to +60 °C, pressure 80 kPa (0,8 bar) to 110 kPa (1,1 bar) and air with standard oxygen content, typically 21 % v/v. The use of electrical equipment in areas with atmospheric conditions other than those mentioned before requires special consideration and may require additional assessment and testing. The international corrections and European amendments on the general requirements for explosion protected electrical equipment have been integrated in this new edition. The responsible body is DKE/K 241 "Schlagwetter- und explosionsgeschützte elektrische Betriebsmittel" ("Equipment protected from firedamp and explosion") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
