Part 1 of International Standard IEC 60071 applies to AC systems with a maximum voltage for equipment over 1 kV. It describes how to proceed with the selection of standardized insulation levels for phase-to-earth, phase-to-phase and longitudinal insulation of equipment and installations in these systems. It contains a list of standardized values, from which the rated voltages are to be chosen. This part recommends the assignment of selected rated voltages to the highest voltage for equipment. This assignment is only applicable to insulation co-ordination; the requirements for personal safety are not included in this standard. Although the fundamental principles of this part are also valid for the insulation of overhead lines, the withstand voltages can differ from the standard rated voltages. The equipment committees are responsible for the specifications for the rated voltages and test methods which are suitable for the particular equipment, taking the recommendations of this standard into account. This version also contains Amendment 1 including additional standardized ultra high voltage levels (UHV). 1 100 kV and 1 200 kV are being introduced as new voltage levels (highest voltages for equipment). The required lightning impulse withstand voltages and switching impulse withstand voltages are assigned to those two new voltage levels. The responsible Committee is K 122 "Isolationskoordination" ("Insulation co-ordination") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Informational Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
