The standard describes test methods designed to examine the effect of solar radiation on equipment and components at the surface of the earth. The main characteristics of this environment test are the spectral energy distribution of the sun at the earth's surface, and the intensity of received energy, in combination with controlled temperature conditions. However, it may be necessary to consider a combination of solar radiation with other environments, for example, temperature, humidity, air velocity, etcetera. The purpose of testing is to investigate to what extent the equipment or components are affected by solar radiation. The test method detects electrical, mechanical or other weak points of the specimen. This part of IEC 60068 provides guidance for testing equipment or components under solar radiation conditions. The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 60068-2-5:2000-07 (Tests) and DIN EN 60068-2-9:2000-08 (Guidance): a) DIN EN 60068-2-5:2000-07 and DIN EN 60068-2-9:2000-08 have been combined. b) The selection of the range has been generalized. c) Preferred irradiance and temperature values have been introduced. d) The use of all lamps specified in CIE 85 is allowed. The responsible Committee is K 131 "Umgebungsbedingungen, Klassifizierung und Prüfungen" ("Environmental conditions, classification and tests") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
