The international series of standards IEC 60051 has been published in nine separate parts according to the following structure and under the general title Direct acting indicating analogue electrical measuring instruments and their accessories. Part 1: Definitions and General Requirements Common to all Parts. Part 2: Special Requirements for Ammeters and Voltmeters. Part 3: Special Requirements for Wattmeters and Varmeters. Part 4: Special Requirements for Frequency Meters. Part 5: Special Requirements for Phase Meters, Power Factor Meters and Synchroscopes. Part 6: Special Requirements for Ohmmeters (Impedance Meters) and Conductance Meters. Part 7: Special Requirements for Multi-function Instruments. Part 8: Special Requirements for Accessories. Part 9: Recommended Test Methods. Parts 2 to 9 are not complete in themselves and shall be read in conjunction with this Part 1. All of these parts are arranged in the same format and a standard relationship between subject and clause number is maintained throughout. This re-arrangement will assist the reader of IEC 60051 to distinguish information relating to the different types of instruments. The following explanations will be given of the most important changes compared to the previous edition: 1. Analog display devices with electronic converters have been included, whereby electromagnetic interference is to be expected for these converters. Therefore, EMC requirements and tests (for example, tests for electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic radiation, burst, conducted disturbances, etcetera) have been added. 2. Taking into account IEC 61010-1:2010, safety symbols and safety requirements (for example, constructive requirements for protection against electric shock, air and creepage distances, requirements for touchable parts, requirements for connection to external circuits, requirements for connection to the supply circuit, requirements for batteries mounted in the device or accessory) have been incorporated. 3. The term "inherent error" in the original edition has been replaced by the term "uncertainty". 4. The existing publication mainly concerns equipment for in-house use or laboratories, so the scope is limited. Therefore, environmental classifications and classifications by mode of operation, mechanical requirements and degrees of protection, as well as requirements for resistance to mechanical shock, heat resistance and flammability, enclosure strength and requirements for connection terminals have been added. 5. In accordance with the provisions of Subclause 4.3 in IEC 60359:2001, "the manufacturer shall specify limits for transport and packaging for each specified influence quantity," requirements for transport and packaging are included in the new edition. This part of IEC 60051 specifies terms, definitions, classifications, technical requirements, labeling and symbols, packaging and transport, and test requirements for direct indicating analogue measuring instruments. This part is applicable to the following direct indicating analogue measuring instruments: ammeter and voltmeter; wattmeter and varmeter; pointer frequency meter and vibrating reed frequency meter; phase meters, power factor meters and synchronoscopes; ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters; multifunction instruments of the aforementioned types. This part also applies to: various accessories used with these devices, such as: shunts; series resistors and impedances; echo effect sensors for current measurements; echo effect sensors for voltage measurements; electronic converters. Combinations of these devices and accessories, provided they have been matched to each other; direct indicating analog measuring instruments whose scale labeling does not correspond to the electrical input variable, provided the relationship between the two is known; instruments and accessories with electronic components in the measuring circuit and connected circuits. This series of standards does not apply to: devices for special applications that are covered by their own IEC standards; devices for special applications that are covered by their own IEC standards and are used as accessories. This standard does not include requirements for dimensions of devices and accessories (see IEC 60473). The responsible committee is DKE/K 964 "Messgeräte für elektrische beziehungsweise elektromagnetische Größen" ("Measuring instruments for electrical or electromagnetic quantities") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
