This standard contains the German version of the European Standard EN 55017:2011 and is identical to the International Standard CISPR 17:2011. It specifies methods to measure the radio interference suppression characteristics of passive EMC filtering devices used in power and signal lines. The specified methods can also be applied to combinations of over-voltage protection devices and EMC filtering devices. The measurement methods cover the frequency range from 9 kHz to several GHz depending on the device and test circuit. The suppression characteristics of EMC filters and components used for the suppression of EM disturbances are dependent on multiple variables, such as impedance of the circuits to which they connect, operating voltage and current, and ambient temperature. This standard specifies uniform test methods that will enable comparison of filtering and suppression characteristics determined by test laboratories or specified by manufacturers. Methods for laboratory application ("laboratory tests") (type tests) as well as for application by the manufacturer ("factory tests") with and without bias conditions are described. This includes measurement of insertion loss. Methods for measuring the impedance and the S-parameters of electromagnetic suppression devices and components have also been included in this standard. Measurements under bias conditions are performed to determine potential non-linear behaviour of the EMC filtering devices such as saturation effects in inductors with magnetic cores. This testing serves to show the usability in a specific application (such as frequency converters that produce high amplitudes of common mode pulse current and thus may drive inductors into saturation). Measurement under bias conditions may be omitted if the non-linear behaviour can be determined by other methods (such as separate saturation measurement of the inductors used). A direct and an indirect method are specified for the measurement of impedance of EMC filtering devices. Examples of EMC filtering devices and applicable measurement methods are depicted in Table 1 of the standard. The measurement set-ups shall be calibrated and uncertainties linked to the impending measurements shall be considered. The standard also contains specifications for this purpose. Furthermore, it provides specifications for the presentation of the results of the measurement (measurement report). The annexes contain, amongst others, examples of text boxes and information for realisation of a buffer-network which is used for insertion loss measurement as well as information for the set-up for impedance measurement and measurement of the s-parameters. The responsible committee is UK 767.4 "Geräte und Verfahren zum Messen von elektromagnetischen Aussendungen" ("Equipment and methods of measurement of electromagnetic emissions") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE. On the national level K 623 "Funk-Entstörmittel" ("Radio interference suppression equipment") has been involved in this standard project.
