This European Standard aims to assist organizations in achieving effective and efficient treatment and disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in order to prevent pollution and minimize emissions. The objectives of this standard are to promote increased material recycling, to promote high quality recovery operations and to prevent inappropriate disposal of WEEE and fractions thereof. This Part 1 of the series of standards EN 50625 contains requirements applicable to the treatment of all types of WEEE. In the future this general part will be supported by other standards covering particular treatment requirements for (gas discharge) lamps, flat panel displays, cathode ray tubes (CRTs), photovoltaic panels and other equipment containing volatile fluorocarbons or volatile hydrocarbons. The preparation of these standards had been announced by the European Commission in Article 8 of the new version of the Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment 2012/19/EC (WEEE Directive) and mandated with M/528. Since the intended parts of standards in terms of content extend beyond the requirements of the directive, an additional technical report will be prepared, containing a comparison between these requirements and the requirements of the standards. The responsible body is DKE/K 191 "Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit bei Produkten in der Elektrotechnik, Elektronik, Informationstechnik" ("Environmental protection and sustainability in products of electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information technology") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
