This part of the European Standard series EN 50598 describes a methodology for determining the energy efficiency index of an application based on the concept of the semi analytical model (SAM). This methodology is termed the extended product approach (EPA). It enables developers of standards for driven applications to link these to the relative power losses of the integrated motor system for the purpose of calculating the energy efficiency of the system for the entire application. The methodology is based on specified calculation models for speed/load profiles, load profiles and relative power losses for suitable operating points in relation to a torque depending on the speed. The responsible committee is DKE/K 226 "Ausrüstung von Starkstromgeräten und -anlagen mit elektronischen Betriebsmitteln" ("Equipment of power circuit devices and power installations with electronic equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
