For the classification of electrical cables and lines according to EN 13501-3 this European Standard specifies a test method for evaluating the functional integrity of cables and lines having fire resistance under fire conditions. The test determines the survival time for circuit integrity of a cable or line when exposed to fire under the conditions of the standardized temperature-time curve. This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1 and applies to power cables and lines and control cables with rated voltages up to and including 600/1 000 V. Optical fiber and data cables could be tested according to this method, but are not part of this European Standard, as the test methods for such cables are still under development. The responsible committee is DKE/K 411 "Starkstromkabel und isolierte Starkstromleitungen" ("Cables, wires and flexible cords for power installations") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
