This European Standard deals with the safety of electrical operated washing machines intended to be used by trained users in, for example hotels, hospitals, factories, in light industry and on farms. This standard also covers washing machines intended for commercial use in public areas and operated by lay persons, for example in laundrettes or communal laundry rooms. Their rated voltage shall not be more than 250 V for single phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. This standard also covers washing machines making use of other energy sources. It does not cover requirements for these other energy sources or compressed air. However, the effects of these other energy sources on the machines are covered. These washing machines are designed to be connected to hot and/or cold water supply. Washing machines making use of steam or hot water for heating purposes are also within the scope of this standard. The standard covers the essential safety and health requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 511.1 "Wäschepflegegeräte und Geschirrspüler" ("Laundry machines and dishwashers") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
