Overview

This European Standard applies to voltage limiting devices (VLDs) to be applied to d.c. traction systems in order to comply with protective provisions against electric shock from d.c. voltages and mixed a.c.- d.c. voltages, in accordance with EN 50122, taking into account stray current provisions. VLDs operate in such a way as to connect the track return circuit of d.c. railway systems to the earthing system or conductive parts within the overhead contact line zone or current collector zone to avoid impermissible touch voltages caused by rail traffic or short circuits and/or to prevent impermissible touch voltages by decreasing the impedance of the fault-current circuit and, thereby, causing the overcurrent to trigger the circuit-breaker. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 351.2 "Ortsfeste Anlagen" ("Fixed installations") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
