This standard contains the initial, start of life dimensional requirements as well as optical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements of a fully installed splice closure in order for it to be categorised as an EN standard product. Closures represent an important building block in fibre optic cabling, which in turn form an essential part of modern communication technology. The ingress of foreign matter or moisture, such as ground water or rain, shall be avoided depending on the environmental conditions in order to ensure the functionality of the transmission line. A cheap closure that does not confirm with the standard can cause significant financial damage in the case of failure. This standard contains the initial, start of life dimensional requirements as well as optical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements of a fully installed splice closure in order for it to be categorised as an EN standard product. It aids customers, manufacturers and test laboratories with the secure definition of tests and parameters. It refers to ETSI EN 300 019-1-4, class 8.1 and the environments described in IEC 61753-1 for specification of the application requirements. The tests are carried out in accordance with the specifications in the IEC 61300 series. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cable installations") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
