This part of the standard series 50288 contains requirements for 1 to 7 multi-pair cables for use in analogue and digital telecommunication networks and control with their corresponding definitions and requirements. It covers indoor cables, characterised up to 2 MHz, to be used in Small Office Home Office (SOHO) type 1 cable application. For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 50288-1:2003, clause 3, apply. Clause "Cable construction" indicates that the conductor shall be solid copper and meet the requirements of EN 50288-1:2003, 4.1. The conductor shall be plain or metal coated. The nominal conductor diameter shall be between 0,4 mm and 0,8 mm. Constructions with "copper clad" conductors do not meet the requirements. Conductor insulation shall be composed of solid, cellular or composite (for example, foam skin) polyolefin according to the appropriate part of EN 50290-2-23. The cable element shall be a pair. The number of twist per meter shall be at least 5. Unless otherwise specified, the colour coding for identification is given in IEC 60189-2 or EN 60708, as appropriate. The colours shall meet the requirements of EN 50288-1:2003, 4.4. Where appropriate, screening of the cabling elements shall be applied in accordance with EN 50288-1:2003, 4.5. When a braid is used the minimum braid coverage (for mechanical purposes) shall be 60 %. When a foil and braid are used the minimum braid coverage (for mechanical purposes) shall be 30 %. Coverage is defined in EN 50290-1-2. Regarding cable make-up, the cable elements shall be laid up in concentric layer(s) or units to form the cable core. The number of cores shall be 1 to 7 twisted pairs. When required the interstices of the cable core shall be filled continuously with a compound suitable to prevent water penetration within the cable. The filling compound shall meet the requirements specified in EN 50290-2-28. Where interstitial fillers are used they shall meet the requirements of 4.8 of EN 50288-1:2003. The cable core shall be screened. Screening may consist of aluminium tape in conjunction with plastic straps and a metallic drain wire; the metal tape has contact to the drain wire. A protective wrapping may be applied under and/or over the screen. The diameter of the drain wire shall be at least 0,4 mm. If protective wrappings are used they shall comply with EN 50288-1:2003, 4.11. The sheath shall consist of a suitable material in accordance with the relevant part of EN 50290-2. In clause "Test methods and cable requirements", the electrical tests, mechanical tests, the environmental tests and the fire performance test methods are dealt with. For the electrical tests, in particular the low frequency and d.c. electrical measurements and the high-frequency electrical and transmission measurements are dealt with. This document shall be used together with generic specification EN 50288-1 (VDE 0819-1). The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 412.1 "Symmetrische Kabel und Leitungen, Drähte" ("Symmetric cables and conductors, wires") the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
