Overview

The standards of the EN 50174 series specify requirements for the phases of specification, planning, realization and operation of telecommunications cabling which apply to both generic cabling systems (see the standards of the DIN EN 50173 series) and application-specific cabling systems (see, for example, the standards of the DIN EN 50098 series). Part 1 of the series gives specifications to be complied with during the specification phase and the operation of a telecommunications cabling system. This edition of the standard incorporates Amendment 2 to EN 50174-1 which includes a new normative Annex F on automated infrastructure management systems including a corresponding new definition and abbreviations in Clause 3 as well as a notice in Table 3. Furthermore, some changes have been made to Subclauses 4.2.2.1, 4.2.3.1, 4.2.5.1, 4.2.7.1 and 4.3.2.1 in order to clarify the respective contents. Part 2 of the series gives specifications on the phases of planning and installation of a telecommunications cabling system inside buildings. This also involves specifications regarding the required segregations of metallic information technology cabling and power supply cabling, information on electricity distribution systems and lightning protection as well as informative details on electromagnetic compatibility including a list giving any EMC relevant aspects which may have to be considered. Amendment 2 to EN 50174-2 which has been incorporated into this edition includes a new Clause 12 giving specifications regarding common pathways and spaces in a multi-tenant building, modified specifications regarding the planning and installation of electrical isolation components within buildings (in Annex A.3), updated and supplemented requirements for installation planning and maintenance of telecommunications cabling in Clause 4, modified specifications on the requirements for the installation of telecommunications cabling in Clause 5, on the segregation of metallic information technology cabling and power supply cabling in Clause 6, modified specifications for office (commercial) buildings, industrial buildings, homes and data centres in Clauses 8, 9, 10 and 11 as well as various editorial corrections. The committee responsible is DKE/GUK 715.3 "Informationstechnische Verkabelung von Gebäudekomplexen" ("Customer premises cabling") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
