This standard contains specifications meeting the essential requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This European Standard specifies safety and hygiene requirements for the design and manufacture of dough mixers with rotating bowls of capacity greater than or equal to 5 l and less than or equal to 500 l. These dough mixers are used separately or in a line in the food industry and shops (pastry-making, bakeries, confectionery, etcetera) for manufacturing of dough by mixing flour, water and other ingredients. These machines can be fed by hand or mechanically. These machines are sometimes used in other industries (for example pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, printing), but hazards related to these uses are not dealt with in this standard. This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the transport, installation, adjustment, operation, cleaning, maintenance, dismantling, disassembling and scrapping of dough mixers, when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This European Standard does not deal with the following machines: - planetary mixers (see EN 454); - continuously fed machines; - mixers with stationary vertical bowls; - experimental and testing machines under development by the manufacturer; - domestic appliances; - automatic loading and unloading devices. This European Standard is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before its date of publication as a European Standard. This European Standard contains the German version of EN 453:2014 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 153 "Machinery intended for use with foodstuffs and feed" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 453:2010-10 as follows: a) normative references have been updated; b) a solid guard to protect against dust emission has been added; c) the table concerning the verification of safety and hygiene requirements has been completely revised. The national interests during the preparation are represented by Committee NA 060-18-01 AA "Bäckereimaschinen" ("Bakery equipment") at Technical Section "Food processing machinery and packaging machinery" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of bakery equipment, and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
