This standard contains specifications meeting the essential requirements set out in Annex I of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC which apply to machines that are first placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market, in order to facilitate proof of compliance with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Clause 4 which are relevant to pendulum cross-cut sawing, designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials when covered with plastic edging and/or plastic/light alloy laminates when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. This European Standard does not apply to: a) machines for cross cutting logs; b) machines where the saw unit can be rotated about a horizontal axis. The requirements of this European Standard apply to all machines whatever their method of control, for example, electromechanical and/or electronic. This European Standard is primarily directed at machines which are manufactured after the date of its publication as EN. This standard differs from DIN EN 1870-12:2010-07 as follows: a) automatic and displaceable machines have been deleted from the scope; b) in Clause 2, the normative references have been updated with regard to the new editions of the cited standards; c) in Clause 3, the definitions of pendulum cross-cut sawing machines have been modified and the definition of automatic pendulum cross-cut sawing machines has been deleted; d) in Clause 5, the requirements for the functional safety of the control system of the machine, for the braking system and for the protection against mechanical hazards have been revised; e) in 6.4, further requirements have been included; f) normative Annex A "Impact test method for guards" has been added; g) normative Annex B "Braking tests" has been added.
This document replaces DIN EN 1870-12:2010-07 .
