Overview

The European Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 196; WG 3 "Hydraulischer Schreitausbau" ("Hydraulic powered roof supports") (chairmanship: Germany) is responsible for this standard. The responsible German Mirror Committee is NA 008-02-02 AA "Hydraulischer Schreitausbau" ("Hydraulic powered roof supports") of Mining Standards Committee (FABERG). The task of the hydraulic powered roof support is to protect people in working faces from rock and coal falls. Thus, the hydraulic powered roof support shall also still support the hanging strata safely at 1 600 m below the earth's surface and screen off the working area with a height up to 6 m against rock and coal falls. Because of this, people working at the working face necessarily stay in the operating rage of the hydraulic roof support. As a result of these special safety tasks of the hydraulic powered roof support, the tasks of "reliable support of the strata" and "protection of people at the working face against rock and coal falls" have top priority. Thus, in cases of incorrect operation, a hazard for people which has been caused by hydraulic powered roof support can not generally be excluded, as people in the working face must stay in the support units for their own safety. The DIN EN 1804 standard series on roof support which has been prepared in the process of implementing EC Machinery Directive 98/37/EC had to be updated to meet the provisions of the new edition of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC to ensure that the presumption of conformity is maintained.
