To assess the exposure to ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols at the workplace, exposure metrics such as the number or surface (area) concentration are important. This document provides a guideline for determining exposure to airborne particles (expressed as the number concentration of ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols) in the workplace using particle counters (so-called CPCs). The principles of operation, the problems associated with sampling in the working environment, calibration, maintenance of equipment, measurement uncertainty and reporting of measurement results are covered. Possible problems and limitations of application are described so that limit values can be set in the future and compliance measurements can be carried out. The standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 137 "Assessment of workplace exposure to chemical and biological agents" (secretariat: DIN). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Group NA 095-03-01-01 AK "Staub" ("Particulate matter") of Working Committee "Messstrategien und Anforderungen an Messverfahren" ("Measurement strategies and requirements for test methods") at DIN Standards Committee Safety Design Principles (NASG).
