This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This standard specifies the general safety requirements for steel converters. This European Standard addresses the hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events applicable to steel converters. It covers not only the conditions in which the machines are used as intended, but also includes other conditions that the manufacturer has considered, such as foreseeable faults, malfunctions or incorrect use. This also applies to hazards occurring during the various life phases of the mechanical plant and equipment, as described in 5.4 of EN ISO 12100:2010. This standard covers mechanical plant and equipment for the production of rolled long metal products from the material feeding station through the rolling process equipment, including the preparation area. This standard contains the German version of EN 16774:2016 prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 322 "Equipments for making and shaping of metals - Safety requirements" of the European Committee of Standardization (CEN). The national interests during the preparation of this standard were represented by Committee NA 060-02-01 AA "Stahlerzeugung (SpA CEN/TC 322/WG1)" ("Steel production (mirror committee to CEN/TC 322/WG1)") of Technical Section "Equipments for making and shaping of metals" of DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of manufacturers and users of steel converters, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
