Overview

DIN EN 16656 specifies the design and use of the RFID Emblem, an easily identified visual guide that indicates the presence of RFID. DIN EN 16656:2014 is the result of the modified adoption of International Standard ISO/IEC 29160:2012 into the framework of European standardization. The standard does not cover the positioning of the RFID Emblem on signs. In March 2009, the European standards organizations CEN, CENELEC and ETSI accepted the European Commission's Mandate M/436 to draw up and execute a standardization work programme for the sector-specific implementation of RFID applications. The focus of the Mandate is the data protection, privacy and information aspects. The mandate is being executed in two phases. In phase 1, a roadmap was drawn up analysing the current situation in Europe, identifying gaps in standardization and identifying a corresponding standardization work programme. This phase was completed in 2011. In phase 2, the gaps identified during phase 1 are filled. This European Standard is one of eleven standardization deliverables to be drawn up in phase 2. RFID is a technology that touches all aspects of the supply chain, from manufacturing all the way to the end-use consumer. It is important for industrial users, retailers and consumers to know when and where an RFID tag is present. DIN EN 16656 provides all interested parties with a readily identifiable method to inform users of the presence of RFID. The RFID Emblem provides a visible identification of RFID transponders, interrogators and tagged items. Therefore, this standard meets one of the main requirements for consumer privacy protection. DIN EN 16656:2014 has been prepared by International Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31 "Automatic identification and data capture techniques" and has been adopted by Technical Committee CEN/TC 225 "AIDC technologies" the secretariat of which is held by NEN (Netherlands). The responsible Working Committee is "Automatische Identifikation und Datenerfassungsverfahren" ("Automatic identification and data capture techniques") of the Information Technology and selected IT Applications Standards Committee (NIA) at DIN.
