This European Standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Union, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called "presumption of conformity"). EN 16590 describes an approach to the design and assessment, for all safety life cycle activities, of safety-relevant systems comprising electrical and/or electronic and/or programmable electronic systems (E/E/PES) on tractors used in agriculture and forestry, and on self-propelled ride-on machines and mounted, semi-mounted and trailed machines used in agriculture. It is also applicable to municipal equipment. It covers the possible hazards caused by the functional behaviour of E/E/PES safety-related systems, as distinct from hazards arising from the E/E/PES equipment itself (electric shock, fire, nominal performance level of E/E/PES dedicated to active and passive safety, etcetera). This standard contains the German version of EN 16590-3:2014 which has been prepared by CEN/TC 144 "Tractors and machinery used in agriculture and forestry" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The national interests during the preparation are represented by Committee NA 060-16-12 AA "Elektronik" ("Electronics") at Technical Section Agricultural engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of agricultural machinery, and of employers' liability insurance associations are involved in the preparation.
