Short description
This European Standard aims to provide a reliable, repeatable and objective method for assessing epiphytic lichen diversity. It defines criteria for sampling design, surveying lichens at standard trees and quality assurance. The Annex describes possible ways to interpret the data afterwards. The results allow assessing the impact of anthropogenic intervention , particularly for estimating the effects of atmospheric pollution.
Overview

Lichens, due to their morphological, ecological and physiological peculiarities, are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment. Lichen diversity is an excellent indicator of pollution from acidic or eutrophying air pollution, as they respond relatively fast to a deterioration in air quality. They can re-colonize urban and industrial environments as a consequence of changing conditions within a few years. This European Standard proposes a standardized, repeatable and objective method to assess lichen diversity on tree bark. It specifies the criteria for sampling design, measurements of lichens on standardised trees and quality assurance. Possible ways of interpretation are described in the annex. The results allow an estimation of air pollution effects.
