Overview

This document (EN 16407-1:2014) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 138 "Non-destructive testing", the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR (France). The national body responsible is Working Committee NA 062-08-22 AA "Industrielle Durchstrahlungsprüfung" ("Industrial radiation methods") at DIN Standards Committee Material Testing (NMP). This part specifies fundamental techniques of radiographic inspection using films and digital radiography with the object of enabling satisfactory and repeatable results to be obtained economically. The techniques are based on generally recognized practice and fundamental theory of the subject. This standard applies to the radiographic examination of pipes in metallic materials for the detection of service induced flaws such as corrosion pitting or defects due to generalized corrosion and erosion. Besides its conventional meaning, the term "pipe" as used in this standard should be understood to cover also other cylindrical bodies such as tubes/hoses, penstocks, boiler drums and pressure vessels. Weld inspection for typical welding process induced flaws is not covered by this standard; but weld inspection is included for the detection of corrosion/erosion type flaws. The test may be carried out on pipes with or without insulation, for example in cases where loss of material due to corrosion or erosion is suspected either internally or externally of the pipe. This part of the standard covers the tangential inspection technique for detection of a reduction of wall thickness and through-wall sizing of wall loss; the arrangement of the radiation source is as follows: a) on the pipe centre line, or b) with the radiation source offset from the pipe centre line, where the distance for the offset with respect to the pipe centre line is by the pipe radius. Part 2 of this standard covers double wall radiography; note that the double wall double image technique is often combined with tangential radiography with the radiation source on the pipe centre line. This standard applies to tangential radiographic inspection using industrial radiographic film techniques, computed digital radiography (CR) and digital detector arrays (DDA).
