CEN/TC 234 "Gas infrastructure" has prepared a full series of functional standards dealing with all parts of the gas supply systems from the location of the gas injection into the transmission system up to the connection onto the domestic, commercial or industrial gas appliance. This document is also a functional standard. This standard presents all the activities to be carried out to implement a safety management system (SMS) covering the entire infrastructure of the transport system operator (TSO), in particularly the integrity management of transmission pipelines is outlined. The standard is based on the state of the art management and maintenance practices of TSOs as these have proved historically to maintain high levels of safety, including possible and necessary improvements. The standard describes the resources, information systems and technical and organisational activities, for which the TSO is responsible and which are needed to prevent incidents and mitigate their consequences. It is preconditioned that the user of this standard has a fundamental understanding of the gas infrastructure. The structure adopted by this standard follows the structure implemented by the standard EN ISO 14001. This standard requires the TSO to develop and implement a management system for the safety and the reliability of a gas transmission infrastructure with the same basic principle: "plan, do, check and act (PDCA)". The term "gas infrastructure" exclusively refers to stations used for transmission of natural gas; gas distribution is excluded. In the future CEN/TC 234 will adopt this standard at regular intervals to the latest developments and knowledge. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 032-02-01 AA "Gastransportleitungen" ("Gas Transportation") at DIN.
