Overview

An energy audit is an important step for an organization of any size or type which intends to optimize its energy use and improve its energy efficiency. This standard supplements the attributes of a good quality energy audit specified in DIN EN 16247-1. This part of the European standard on energy audits specifies the requirements, methods and deliverables for energy audits conducted on industrial sites. This standard shall be used in conjunction with DIN EN 16247-1 "Energy audits - Part 1: General requirements". It applies to sites where the energy use is caused by processes, utilities associated with these processes and conditions which are required for operation and directly associated with the process. An industrial site may include one or more production lines, offices, laboratories, research centers, packaging and warehouse sections with specific operating conditions (cool storage, security) and part of the logistics (vehicle access, loading bays). The industrial site may be subjected in whole or in part to an energy audit. The site being audited may include buildings which are not involved in industrial processes. In this case, the energy auditor may use DIN EN 16247-1 "Energy audits - Part 2: Buildings". This applies, for example, where audits of buildings examine the comfort conditions of their users. In some cases, specific conditions in relation to a service (e.g. in a data centre) may be taken into account. Where, in case of an industrial site, on-site transportation falls into the range of applicability of the energy audit, the energy auditor may use DIN EN 16247-4 "Energy audits - Part 4: Transport". The applicability of parts 2 and 4 might be decided during the first contact. Requirements regarding the competence of energy auditors are covered in DIN EN 16247-5 "Energy audits - Part 5: Competence of energy auditors". The committee responsible for this standard is Working Committee NA 172-00-09 AA "Energieeffizienz und Energiemanagement" ("Energy efficiency and energy management") at DIN.
