In the standards DIN EN 15518-1 to -3, technical requirements, terms and definitions in the field of road weather information systems were specified for the first time on the European level. With regard to the requirements to stationary facilities for road weather information systems (detections systems for slippery conditions), the standard DIN EN 15518-3 will replace the "Betriebstechnische Anforderungen für Glättemeldeanlagen für den Straßenwinterdienst" ("Operational requirements for detection systems for slippery conditions") (edition 11/96) which has been published by the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (Federal Highway Research Institute). Requirements for the data transfer of stationary facilities to a data processing unit which are not covered by the standard are specified in the latest edition of the "Technische Lieferbedingungen für Streckenstationen (TLS)" ("Technical terms of delivery for route stations") of the Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung (Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development). Aspects of road weather information systems (types of data transfer, specifications for the locations of sensors) which are not mentioned in this standard are intended to be dealt with in a national working paper to be prepared by the Forschungsgesellschaft für Straßen- und Verkehrswesen (FGSV) (German Road and Transportation Research Association). The European Standards have been prepared by CEN/TC 337 "Winter maintenance and road service area maintenance equipment" (secretariat: AFNOR, France) under the chairmanship of CEN/TC 337/WG 1 "Winter maintenance machines" (secretariat: DIN). On the national level, the Working Committee within the NKT responsible for the preparation is NA 051-03-02 AA "Maschinen für den Straßenbetriebsdienst (deutsches Spiegelgremium für CEN/TC 337/WG 1)" ("Highway maintenance machines (German Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 337/WG 1)").
