This European Standard specifies the design of retaining and cut-off diaphragm walls and aspects which have to be taken into account when lay-out drawings are created. Diaphragm walls can be permanent or temporary structures. The following types of structure are dealt with: 1) retaining walls: they are usually constructed to support the sides of an excavation in the ground. They include: cast in situ concrete diaphragm walls, precast concrete diaphragm walls, reinforced slurry walls. 2) cut-off walls: they are usually constructed to prevent migration of groundwater, clear or polluted, or of other contaminants present in the ground. They include: slurry walls, possibly with membranes or sheet piles, plastic concrete walls. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-05-13 AA "Schlitzwände (SpA zu CEN/TC 288/WG 1 und WG 15)" ("Diaphragm walls (Mirror Committee to CEN/TC 288/WG 1 and WG 5)") at DIN.
