Overview

This document is part of the series "Railway applications - Gauges" which consists of the following parts: Part 1: General - Common rules for infrastructure and rolling stock. Part 2: Rolling stock gauge. Part 3: Structure gauges. The gauges included have been developed as part of their application on European railways. Other railway systems such as regional and local, urban or suburban networks can also apply the gauge regulations defined in this standard. In this case, the regulations can be required to make use of the rules for specific calculation, particularly where: - specific rolling stock is used (for example underground trains, trams, etcetera, operating on two rails) - the range of curve radii is different. The catalogue included in this standard only includes a selection of gauges. Each railway network is free to define the gauges in accordance with their own needs. Normative references exist to: EN 12299, EN 14363, EN 15663, the other parts of the series of standards EN 15273 and EN 50119. The document is intended to replace the existing regulations in this area, in particular UIC leaflets of the series 505 and 506 and to define a common standard. The document is part of a series of three standards forming the European Standard on rolling stock gauges and structure gauges. In this second part the rules for dimensioning the rolling stock gauges and the related rules for the various profiles are given. The first part of this series of standards covers general definitions and the rules applicable to rolling stock and structure gauges, whereas the third part gives the definitions for the structure gauges; it explains the parameters concerned and gives the methodology for determining the structure gauges and the distances between centres of the tracks. This European Standard shall be applied by all authorities involved in all types of railway operation. It is applicable to the design of new and remodelled vehicles and to the checking of the gauge for vehicles already in use. The application of the rules of this European Standard makes it possible to specify the threshold values for the dimensions of vehicles, so that the structure gauge will be observed. This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports the essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC.
