Overview

This European Standard DIN EN 14908-1 is part of a series of standards dealing with the communication system Building Network Protocol (CNP) which is based on LonWorks technology. This standard series specifies both the hardware and software which are necessary for the operation of the communication system. There will be other parts which describe the functions, profiles and conformity tests. DIN EN 14908-1 defines the so-called "Protocol Stack". This protocol stack describes the communication system on the basis of the ISO/OSI basic reference model which divides communication in up to seven layers with individual protocol. In the case of control network protocol, all seven layers and the interfaces between the layers are specified. Here, the outer interfaces to the physical layer and to the application layer of particular importance because they are normally interfaces to which a user has to connect its device, software, etcetera. Since there are different transmission media for the building network protocol, such as twisted pair and power line communication, individual parts of this standards series have been prepared which are adapted to the general part of the layer 1 specification. To facilitate the understanding of the specifications for those persons who want to implement the control network protocol, Annex A provides a reference implementation which exemplarily describes some parts of the specification by means of program parts. The responsible German committee is Working Committee NA 041-03-68 AA "Gebäudeautomation und -kommunikation (SpA CEN/TC 247/WG 4)" ("Building automation and communication (Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 247/WG 4)") of the Heating and Ventilation Technology Standards Committee (NHRS) at DIN.
