This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the new EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard specifies safety and hygiene requirements for the design and manufacture of bread slicers of type 1 and 2 as defined in clause 3. The intended use of these machines is to cut baked bread into slices. This European Standard covers significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to bread slicers when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see clause 4). This European Standard covers requirements for the safe operation of the machine including loading, cutting, unloading, cleaning (crumb removal) and maintenance. These machines can be manually or automatically operated. The following machines are excluded from the scope of this standard: - testing machines under development by the manufacturer; - frame cutter machines with multiple blades moving horizontally; - domestic appliances and machines intended for use by the general public; - machines with horizontal circular cutting systems; - rectangular cutting machines for cutting or sawing of panel size products into small pieces. The significant hazards covered by this standard are described in clause 4. When drawing up this standard, it has been assumed that the bread slicers falling within the scope are operated only by trained personnel and that the machines are not intended to be cleaned with water jet. This European Standard is not applicable to bread slicers which were manufactured before the date of publication of this European Standard. This standard contains the German version of EN 13954:2005+A1:2010 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 153 "Machinery intended for use with foodstuffs and feed" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following changes have been made with respect to DIN EN 13954:2005: a) The standard has been changed and adapted with respect to the new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC; b) An informative Annex ZB on the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been added. The national interests during the preparation of the standard were represented by Committee NA 060-18-01 AA "Bäckereimaschinen" ("Bakery equipment") of Technical Section "Food Processing Machinery" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the interested parties were involved in the preparation of this standard.
