This standard specifies the functions, major components, characteristics and test methods for overfill prevention systems. The systems are suitable for use on tank trucks for conveyance of liquid fuels having a flash point up to but not exceeding 100 °C, excluding liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The requirements apply to overfill prevention systems suitable for use at ambient temperatures in the range from -20 °C to +50 °C, subjected to normal operational pressure variations. The overfill prevention system prevents the maximum filling level of a compartment of a tank vehicle from being exceeded by interrupting the filling operation on the loading side. It is not the function of an overfill prevention system to prevent volume or weight overloading. The function of the overfill prevention system is the final means of containing loaded product within a compartment and preventing a dangerous situation. It is therefore of critical importance that all components have a high degree of reliability and that all European gantries provide a compatible system with tank trucks. Not all the components of an overfill prevention system are necessarily supplied by one manufacturer but may include cross-compatibility parts supplied by different manufacturers/suppliers. The following essential modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 13922:2003-08: a) requirements regarding electrical connections between the tank and the truck chassis have been incorporated; b) designation of devices in potentially explosive atmospheres has been updated and a note has been incorporated in 6.3.7; c) cited standards have been updated. The European Standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 296 "Tanks for transport of dangerous goods" (secretariat: AFNOR, France). The collaborating German Working Committee is NA 104-02-04 AA "Überfüllsicherungen und Füllstandsanzeiger" ("Overfill prevention devices and tank content gauges") of NATank.
