Overview

This European Standard defines terms and specifies the general design characteristics of portable ladders. The standard does not apply to steps; DIN EN 14183 applies to these. It does not apply to ladders designed for specific professional use such as fire brigade ladders, roof ladders and mobile ladders. Accidents during the use of ladders can lead to serious injuries or even fatalities. To improve the stability of straight ladders the standard specifies a wider standing surface or the use of stabilizing traverses or other stabilizing devices. The DIN committee responsible for this standard is NA 042-04-20 AA "Spiegelausschuss zu CEN/TC 93 Leitern" ("Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 93 Ladders") at DIN Standards Committee Timber and Furniture (NHM). With respect to DIN EN 131-1:2011-09, the following changes have been made: a) stabilizing devices or an increased stand width have been included in the figures for straight ladders; b) additional terms 3.49, 3.50 and 3.51 for stabilizing devices have been added to Subclause 3; c) requirements for the minimum stand width for straight ladders have been specified in 4.2.1, Table 2 and Table 6.
