This document is a generic standard on the structural properties of railway vehicle bodies. The standard contains in particular quality and safety aspects. Normative references are made to EN 10002-1, EN 13749 and EN 15663 as well as EN 15663. This European Standard specifies minimum structural requirements for railway vehicle bodies and is intended to provide a uniform basis for the structural design of vehicle bodies. It is part of the series "Railway applications - Structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies", which consists of the following parts: - Part 1: Locomotives and passenger rolling stock (and alternative method for freight wagons) - Part 2: Freight wagons. This document supersedes EN 12663-1:2010. The structural design of railway vehicle bodies depends both on the loads they are subject to and the characteristics of the materials they are manufactured from. The loading requirements for the vehicle body structural design and testing are based on proven experience supported by the evaluation of experimental data and published information. The supplier of railway vehicle bodies is given the freedom to optimise his design whilst maintaining requisite levels of safety. The adoption of corresponding structural subjects from EN 16404 required significant modifications to the previous edition of EN 12663-1: - in Clause 2 "Normative references", EN 16404 has been added; - an item on re-railing and recovery operations has been added to the list in 5.1; - an additional mass for recovery operations has been added in Table 1 with corresponding alignment of Table 10 and subsequent note; - a further subclause on re-railing and recovery operations has been added to Clause 6. This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC.
