To improve the reliability, availability and durability of high speed and maintenance of the European rail transportation system, the required quality, safety and performance of wheelset-bearings shall be ensured, which are addressed by a series of standards: EN 12080, EN 12081 and EN 12082. This European Standard was created with the intention of standardizing the testing of wheelset-bearings for all types of rail vehicles, thereby ensuring that the assembly consisting of bearing housing, bearing(s), seal(s) and grease fully meets the operational requirements. This test comprises two sections, a "bench performance test", the details of which are described in this document, and an "operational test". If a performance test is prescribed, then it shall be carried out in accordance with this European Standard. The scope of this test depends on the novelty of the bearing design, the seal, the grease and/or the bearing housing, as well as the application. This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC. The responsible standardization committee is Working Committee NA 087-00-02-02 AA "Fahrtechnik" ("Running dynamics") at DIN Standards Committee Railway (FSF).
