This European Standard specifies an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) routine method for the analysis of unalloyed and low alloyed steels, whose iron content shall be at least 95 %. For inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric analysis, the sample is introduced into inductively coupled argon plasma. The elements are atomized at a temperature of 5 000 K to 7 000 K in the plasma and excited to light emission. During simultaneous analysis, the emitted light is dispersed into element-specific wavelengths in a polychromator and light intensity is detected with a set of firmly installed photomultipliers. Light intensity is proportional to the amount of atoms of an element excited in the plasma. The method described in this standard is also suitable for the elements Si, Mn, P, Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, and Sn. It may also be used, after validation, for other mass fractions and other elements. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 021-00-30 AA "Analyseverfahren" ("Analytical methods") at DIN.
