Overview

DIN 86735 "Oil-water separators - Tank system for bilge water on seagoing vessels" documents the basic system set-up of the bilge water tank system for optimal treatment of all accruing liquids. This standard is an application standard. As a rule the treatment of bilge water takes place by using separation systems with the intent of preventing marine pollution. With MEPC. 107 (49) "Marine Environment Protection Committee" from 18 July 2002, internationally applicable guidelines and specifications for accruing bilge water on seagoing vessels for prevention of marine pollution were clearly specified, namely with a maximum residual oil content of 15 mg/l (15 ppm) at the clean water outlet. DIN 86735 documents an optimal solution scheme for a bilge water tank system on seagoing vessels. Moreover, the requirements for pipes and valves, oil drain monitoring and control systems, and an automatic stopping mechanism were described. The suggested solution for appropriate arrangement of the tank system to ensure environmentally-friendly ship service is unique. This standard has been prepared in NA 132-02-11 AA "Schutz der Meeresumwelt" ("Marine environment protection").
